Keys to avoid breaking your mind choosing the toilet on your boat – Part I
Don't rack your brains trying to choose the right toilet for your boat. Consider the following guidelines before making your decision and ensure that there are no problems.
Since choosing a toilet for your home is not a big deal, as the drainage and plumbing installation is already done, we assume that choosing a toilet for a boat is easy. And although manufacturers of marine toilets continue to develop products that offer us comfort like at home, there are insurmountable differences to take into account.
1. COMPOSITION: A complete sanitation system consists of: toilet, storage tank, cover inlet and discharge pump for emptying in non-restricted areas. It is essential that the toilet has built-in stainless turbines, which can efficiently grind all waste, so that it flows smoothly throughout the system.
2. WATER: Water consumption should be a very important consideration, and what you choose will depend on the tank capacity. Higher water usage does not mean that the waste will be ground up better and therefore the toilet will be cleaner. If a toilet uses 3-4 litres of water per flush, it could refill a 75 litre tank in less than a day. This is acceptable if you spend most of your time at sea, in unrestricted water areas or have a tank on board with a huge capacity. But otherwise, it will become a nuisance in no time.
3. ENERGY: Opt for low-consumption electric toilets, paying attention to the manufacturer's advice. The toilets we tested range from 20 amps to 40 amps, and there is a considerable difference between them, which will drain the on-board batteries very quickly and require more wiring to connect to the power supply.
4. NOISE : You want to make sure your toilet works, but you don't want to know when a passenger uses it late at night. And while no toilet is completely silent, there are some pretty quiet models out there. Noise is measured in decibels on the A scale (Dba), so be sure to look at the Dba when choosing your toilet.
